Delaware Transit to Reduce Bus Stops

Posted:

DOVER, Del.- Bus service is integral to many Delaware residents trying to get around, but Delaware Transit is cutting out some stops because of low ridership.

Lois Parker lives at Luther Village in Dover and she relies on the 107 bus to get nearly everywhere she needs to go.

But starting Sunday the 107 will no longer stop in front of Luther Village, senior citizens from the apartment complex will have to walk to the next nearest stop.

"It's an inconvenience because this is just ideal for most of the senior citizens that live here," she said. "A lot of them are not as physically fit as I am and I'm not the greatest."

Delaware Transit says it is eliminating the stop because of low ridership and difficulties staying on time.

But Johnny Boyd, a resident of Luther Village, said the next closest stop is too far away.

"It hurts to walk that far down, it really does," he said. "A lot of these people can't walk good."

Parker says the distance to the next stop means she'll probably call Para transit more and that costs her five times more than the bus. She'll also have to use her walker more often.

"Anytime I have to walk a distance, like if I have to walk to the next stop sign I'll always have to bring my walker," she said.

Delaware Transit is also eliminating some stops on Route 106.

Instead of the bus going into Dover Air Force Base to pick riders up, they will now board at the visitors center.
