QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY, Md.— Authorities in Queen Anne's County say a man was seriously injured Monday morning when he tried to drive his riding mower across the highway and was hit by a tractor-trailer.
Maryland State Police said that at around 6:30 a.m., 57-year-old George Hummer of Chestertown was operating a John Deere Zero-Turn mower when he tried to cross MD 290 just north of the MD 544 intersection, and was struck by an International tractor-trailer.
Hummer was flown via Medivac helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer, 55-year-old John Short Jr. of Millington, was not hurt in the collision, investigators said.
State troopers performed a commercial vehicle inspection on the tractor-trailer after the crash. MD-290 was closed in both directions for approximately one hour.
According to police, an initial investigation determined that Hummer was at fault and charges are pending.
