DOVER, Del.– Kent County will soon be home to a sports complex with 15 fields and an indoor facility after the state of Delaware agreed to give $3.2 million in funding.
The decision was made Tuesday at the end of a meeting the Greater Dover Committee held with the Kent County Levy Court.
State officials said the complex could provide an economic impact of more than $18 million annually and create 302 jobs in the county. Alan Levin, director of the Delaware Economic Development Office, said in a statement that he is excited about the potential benefits of the facility.
"This will provide the state with the infrastructure needed to compete for more sports tourism- already a $2.1 billion industry in Delaware," Levin explained.
Officials said the new complex, which will mainly host soccer, field hockey, and lacrosse games, could draw in up to 10 major sports tournaments annually.
Bill Strickland, president of the Greater Dover Committee, led the support for the project, and jokingly remarked that construction would begin "this afternoon."
