SALISBURY, Md.- Delmarva was sizzling on Wednesday as the heat index soared above 108 degrees.
People in Salisbury either took a dip in the pool, cooled of with an icy treat or packed a cool and comfortable movie theater.
However, mailman Charles Murphy did not get to be one of those lucky people.
"We have a fan here on the dashboard and that's our only comfort," Murphy said.
Betty van Dusen did not have a fan or even a car to run her errands.
"I envy the people with cars, if I could I would be in a car right now where the A/C is," she said.
For some people the heat was no excuse as they had no choice but to work outside under the sun.
"I'm a house appraiser so I come out and do replacement cost estimates for insurance companies," said Kate MaCdougall, "and so I am out bushwhacking people's yards with my tape measure."
Around noon, the temperature reading on a cellphone was 97 degrees at a tennis court in Salisbury, but that did not keep avid tennis players off the court.
"We started early in the morning when it's a little bit cooler with the park here so we have shade right up until around noon," said Tom Ward.
Working at a dealership, Timothy Chriest went car to car in the heat but he had a plan to stay cool.
"It's just a white shirt to keep the heat off my neck and then I just dip it some water just to keep cool," Chriest said.
Despite the excessive heat, Peninsula Regional Medical Center and the Salisbury Immediate Care and Injury Center both said that there were no reports of any serious heat-related emergencies.
