LAUREL, Del.- Officials at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Laurel report that a dozen tombstones were damaged after a car drove through the fence and through the cemetery on Saturday.

Headstones weighing 300 to 400 pounds were destroyed and some of them dated back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Scott Allen, who is a member of the Odd Fellow Cemetery, checked out the damage on Monday. Allen, along with his father, take care of the cemetery.

"The front of the cemetery is where the cemetery started, so a lot of the older stones are right here," Allen said.

Many stones that were destroyed will be repaired like the original.  Allen said their priority to fix the stones and honor the people interred in the cemetery.

"It's for the families," Allen said. "They come to visit their deceased relatives, their loved ones, and these people put beautiful monuments on the graves out of love and we want to make sure that's restored."

As for the man that drove through the cemetery, Delaware State Police said he could have had a medical issue while driving, which caused the crash.  The man was cited with inattentive driving.
