Western Md. Volunteer Fire Company Shuts Down

Updated:

McCOOLE, Md. (AP) - The cash-strapped McCoole Volunteer Fire Department in western Maryland is out of business.

Allegany County Emergency Services Chief Dick DeVore told the Cumberland Times-News Monday that calls in McCoole are now being handled by other first responders in the area.

The fire company ended its ambulance service last year.

The company has been struggling financially. It faced possible foreclosure in April 2011 after falling behind on loan payments to an Illinois bank.

Chief Chuck Pearce told the Cumberland Times-News last year that the fire company's revenues had been declining for five or six years.

The department logged 374 fire calls and 485 ambulance calls in 2010.
