Teen in Critical Condition After Being Struck in Sussex County

Posted: Updated:

GREENWOOD, Del.- A teenage girl is in critical condition after being struck by a car east of Greenwood in western Sussex County early Tuesday evening.

Delaware State Police said 13-year-old Danielle Burhop of Greenwood and her 11-year-old sister were traveling eastbound on the shoulder of Beach Highway (SR 16) on Razor Scooters just before 7 p.m.

Troopers said Danielle crossed from south to north behind a tractor-trailer passing the pair when she was hit by a Toyota Corolla.  The car was able to come to a stop after the crash.

Danielle was transported by helicopter to Christiana Hospital.  Her sister was not injured in the accident.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla, 71-year-old Myoung Lee Vermilye of Arlington, Va., was taken by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Beach Highway between Hunters Cove Road and Owens Road was shut down for three hours.

Police are still investigating the crash.
