GREENWOOD, Del.- A teenage girl is in critical condition after being struck by a car east of Greenwood in western Sussex County early Tuesday evening.
Delaware State Police said 13-year-old Danielle Burhop of Greenwood and her 11-year-old sister were traveling eastbound on the shoulder of Beach Highway (SR 16) on Razor Scooters just before 7 p.m.
Troopers said Danielle crossed from south to north behind a tractor-trailer passing the pair when she was hit by a Toyota Corolla. The car was able to come to a stop after the crash.
Danielle was transported by helicopter to Christiana Hospital. Her sister was not injured in the accident.
The driver of the Toyota Corolla, 71-year-old Myoung Lee Vermilye of Arlington, Va., was taken by EMS to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Beach Highway between Hunters Cove Road and Owens Road was shut down for three hours.
Police are still investigating the crash.
