DOVER, Del.- Police in Delaware arrested 17 people for driving under the influence last weekend as part of a statewide crackdown against drunk driving, according to the state Office of Highway Safety.
During the fifth weekend of the "Checkpoint Strikeforce" multi-state campaign against impaired driving, police across the state conducted sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. Last weekend's arrests brings to 59 the total DUI arrests made as part of the campaign. OHS officials said that statewide, there have been more than 2,800 DUI arrests made in Delaware this year.
In addition to the 17 DUI arrests last weekend, officers captured nine wanted persons and made three drug arrests. Officers also issued three citations for underage drinking, issued one cellphone citation, issued seven seat belt citations and issued 73 citations for various other traffic violations.
Three additional sobriety checkpoints are scheduled to occur this weekend at the following locations:
Friday, Aug. 3
- Wilmington (Delaware State Police)- checkpoint
- Rehoboth Beach (multi-jurisdictional effort)- checkpoint
Saturday, Aug. 4
- Seaford (multi-jurisdictional)- checkpoint
Checkpoint Strikeforce is a regional sobriety checkpoint campaign aimed at arresting DUI offenders, and using high visibility enforcement to deter those who would otherwise choose to drink and drive. The campaign, a six-month-long effort running through New Year's Eve, involves setting up weekly DUI checkpoints statewide.
