WOODSIDE, Del.- The United States Post Office is in danger of defaulting if it does not make a more than $5 billion pre-funding health care payment by Aug. 1. The Postal Service does not have the money and will default if the federal government doesn't intervene.
The possibility of a default has some people in Kent County, Del., worried about the future of their local post offices.
Sally Moller has been picking up her mail from the Woodside Post Office for 47 years. She said if it closed she would have to start using rural delivery.
"I like the convenience of having Woodside here and being able to buy my stamps here and pick up my packages and mail," she said.
The little post office on Main Street is more than a place to just pick up mail and buy stamps.
"The people that run it here are like family to a lot of the people here, it's been here for 100 years," said Robert Clevenger. "They really need to keep it here for the people."
The Woodside facility is currently supposed to remain open but the possible default has some people unsure of its future.
In addition to the Aug. 1 payment, the Postal Service owes another $5 billion in September.
