HURLOCK, Md. - It's no secret. Delmarva's under a drought, which means farmers are relying more on their irrigation systems. Farmers say some of those tools are breaking down during the high heat, and irrigation repair companies are seeing big business.
Hoffman Irrigation has a client base of about 300 farmers.
"It's been really hot and dry so we're getting a lot of work," said Justin Hoffman. "Everybody's been irrigating non-stop. The more they run the machine, the more it's going to tear up."
Farmer Jason Scott has to shell out $20-30,000 for a temporary fix on a 13-year-old irrigation system.
"Your heart drops a little bit because you're getting ready to spend a lot of money," said Scott. "You're also losing yield on your soybeans while that thing sits still."
Hoffman says the repairs happen within a day.
Scott added the fix will hopefully pay off, as soybean prices are strong at the moment.
