Md. Car Crash Sends 9 to Hospital


CHESTER, Md.– A head-on collision on Route 18 in Chester sent nine people to the hospital on Sunday.

Maryland State Police said a Honda CR-V was traveling west on Route 18 and crossed over the center line, striking a Toyota Tundra head-on. Troopers said alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor in the crash.

Police say that there were a total of nine passengers between the two vehicles. Officials also say that several people in both vehicles were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Authorities reportedly identified the driver of the first vehicle as 22-year-old Samantha Hartness of Laurel, Md., and the driver of the second car as 50-year-old Stephen Cooke from Washington, D.C. Both drivers were transported by helicopter to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury.

The other seven passengers all reportedly suffered injuries of varying severity and were transported to local hospitals.

Police identified the other passengers in the first vehicle as Justin Brown, 23, of Churchton, Md.; Sarah Velasco, 20, of Stevensville, Md.; and Kerwin Porter, 24, of Pasadena, Md. Authorities identified the second car's other passengers as Lindsey Leonard, 25, of Grasonville, Md.; Jose Jurado, 34, of Silver Spring, Md.; Marissa Rosen, 29, of Grasonville.; and Peter Barlow, 50, of Silver Spring.
