DOVER, Del.- Victory Church in Dover and Feed the Children handed out food to families in need Wednesday.

Volunteers packed cars with as many boxes of food that would fit. Karatina Harris was one of the many people who went to the church to pick up food for her two children.

"It really helps out a lot due to not having a lot of money for food, with the prices of food going up," she said. "So it does help with the additional supplement for my house."

Wendy Henderson with "Feed the Children" said the group did not expect to see this much need for help in Dover.

"The need here is big," she said. "We were surprised when we started looking at the statistics, the poverty line and the unemployment rate, they need help."

The 25 pound boxes of food given out can feed a family of four for up to a week. For many, the savings from not having to buy food can go to other much needed costs.

"School's starting, most definitely school clothes," Harris said. "My kids wear uniforms so that's more expensive for me to buy school clothes plus regular clothes for when they get out of school."

Huey White said he will now be able to pay some of his bills.

"Put some gas in my truck and my car," he said. "So I'm good and it may help me out on my phone bill too. So it's been good, it's been a good journey."

In addition to boxes of food, home supplies and personal care items were also given out at Victory Church.
