REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Authorities say a lightning strike is to blame for a fire that tore through a home in Rehoboth Beach on Wednesday morning.
The incident, which is under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office, occurred shortly after 8 a.m. at a home located on the unit block of Prospect Street. Investigators said the Rehoboth Beach Fire Department responded to the scene and was assisted by departments from Indian River, Lewes, Bethany Beach, Milton, Georgetown, Millville and Roxana.
Authorities said that when firefighters arrived on the scene, they encountered heavy smoke when they arrived at the scene, but the house was not occupied at the time. No injuries were reported, but the blaze caused an estimated $600,000 in damages.
State Fire Marshal's investigators believe the fire originated in the utility storage room, and was caused by a lightning strike.
