Tax-Free Week Begins in Md.

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- With back-to-school shopping on many minds, the state of Maryland kicked off its tax-free week Sunday. Officially dubbed "Shop Maryland," the week runs through next Saturday, Aug. 18 and offers Maryland shoppers the chance to skip out on the state's 6 percent sales tax for clothing and shoe purchases costing $100 or less.

According to the Comptroller's Office, legislation passed in the 2007 special session of the Maryland General Assembly established a tax-free week, occurring every year during the second week in August, until the legislature decides to revisit the issue.

Certain items, like accessories, are not included in this tax exemption.

For a complete list of applicable items, visit the Maryland Comptroller's website.
