Store Clerk Fights Back, Thwarts Attempted Robbery

DOVER, Del.- Dover police say a liquor store clerk fought back when a man armed with a box cutter tried to rob the business over the weekend.

At around 7:35 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a reported robbery in progress at E and J Liquors at 828 Forest St. Police said officers were able to take the suspect, 35-year-old Phillip Hartley, into custody as he fled from the business.

Police said an investigation revealed that Hartley entered the store with a plastic bag over his head. Hartley then demanded money from the clerk and a struggle ensued, police said. Investigators said Hartley ran out of the store empty-handed, at which time he was taken into custody by the responding officers. No one was injured in the incident, police said.

Hartley, who is listed as "homeless" in Dover, was charged with first-degree robbery, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony and criminal mischief. He was ordered held in the James T. Vaughn
