CAMBRIDGE, Md.- A Cambridge man is facing a variety of charges following accusations that he shot his neighbor's dog and then attacked a sheriff's deputy who tried to arrest him in connection with the alleged incident.

The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said that on Thursday, Aug. 2, a deputy responded to a home on Spring Drive in Cambridge to investigate a reported animal problem. Police said that when the deputy arrived on the scene, he learned that 42-year-old Steven Wade Dodson had shot his neighbor's dog for being in his yard and "sniffing around." According to police, Dodson stated that he had shot at the dog nine times. The deputy was able to locate the dog, a Beagle, and found that it had suffered a gunshot wound to the rear leg. The owner of the injured dog took the animal to Salisbury for treatment.

Police said that when the deputy went back to Dodson's home, the man became enraged and attacked the deputy, knocking him to ground before the deputy was able to defend himself and take Dodson into custody.

Dodson was charged with animal cruelty, disorderly conduct, second-degree assault, resisting arrest and hindering a police officer. He was released on $10,000 bond.

The dog is being treated for its injury and is recovering, according to police.
