Joseph Anastasi
MILTON, Del.– Authorities say a Milford man was arrested for his fifth DUI after he crashed his truck following a high-speed police chase.
Delaware State Police said that at around 11:22 p.m. Saturday, a trooper noticed a pickup truck speeding on southbound Coastal Highway at Sylvan Acres Road in Milton. Authorities said the trooper began pursuing the pickup, which failed to pull over and swerved through traffic at high speeds.
According to officials, the driver turned onto Reynolds Road before losing control of the pickup, which struck a construction sign and a fence. The driver then got out of the vehicle and ran into a nearby cornfield where he was taken into custody by the trooper..
Authorities reportedly identified the driver as 40-year-old Joseph Anastasi. There were no reported injuries as a result of the crash.
Police said a computer check revealed Anastasi had four previous DUI convictions in February 1992, July 1999, August 2003 and March 2005. Saturday's arrest would make number five, police said.
Anastasi has been charged with 5th offense driving under the influence of alcohol; resisting arrest; disregarding a police officer's signal; driving while suspended; speeding in excess of 55 mph on a four-lane or divided roadway; and several other traffic-related charges.
He was ordered held in the Sussex Correctional Institution on $11,759 cash bail.
