SALISBURY, Md.- A grant to bring more firefighters to the city of Salisbury is back on the table.
Mayor Jim Ireton announced Thursday that FEMA has extended the deadline for the $1.45 million SAFER Grant to Sept. 4. The grant would create 12 new firefighter positions in the city.
"I am profoundly grateful that FEMA has extended the deadline for this SAFER Grant," Ireton said in a statement. He said he has sent a request to City Council President Terry Cohen for reconsideration of the grant at the council's Aug. 27 legislative session.
During a recent meeting, the council voted 3-2 to reject the grant. Some members argued proper steps were not taken to secure the money.
Ireton hopes that this time around, the council will vote in favor of the grant.
"City staff has answered the questions submitted (by City Council on Aug. 6, 2012) regarding the grant, and I am now, again, hopeful for its passage," the mayor said.
