Lewes Will Decide About Bumpouts on DeVries Circle
LEWES, Del.- The City of Lewes is waiting to decide what it will do with the bumpouts on DeVries Circle.
The bumpouts are there to calm traffic to the area. They line the street in two places, but some residents said they have to go.
"They are dangerous, we've see people hit them, we've seen the results of people hitting them," said Lester Levine who lives on Devries Circle.
While the bumpouts are supposed to slow traffic, the city considered removing them. But now, it might not happen.
"There's more and more children in this neighborhood and I think they should take that into consideration," said Debbie Simms, who also lives on the street. Simms said the bumpouts help keep the neighborhood kids safe.
The city said removing the bump outs could cost between $20,000 and $50,000.
"I don't want them to take them out, I don't want to see the city spend the money for that, and I feel like maybe taking them out would make people think, 'Oh, OK there's no problem here now we can do 35 mph,'" Simms added.
Still neighbors like Levine said they do more harm than good.
"What we're afraid of is either some property will be damaged sometime if a car or truck comes up on the side or some contents or somebody walking on the sidewalk can get hurt," Levine said.
For now the bumpouts will stay on DeVries Circle. The city will discuss alternatives and other options at its council meeting in September.
