SALISBURY, Md.- Some people who live and work near East Main Street in Salisbury said that too many people are driving too fast.
The speed limit is 25 mph on the street but Craig DeVage of DeVage Subs and Donuts said the speeding cars are not exactly paying attention to the posted sign.
"Certainly 45 or excess of 50 is not acceptable," DeVage said.
That speeding has received the attention of the city's police department which is considering installing a speed camera in hopes of slowing down drivers.
"We've been detailing some officers out here to run radar during the day to try to curb some of those issues," said Col. Ivan Barkley of the Salisbury Police Department. "The only problem with that is all too often you can't keep an officer here for an extended period of time."
The city already has seven cameras installed all around Salisbury. That includes two cameras on U.S. Route 50, which is not far from East Main Street.
"I believe that people are diverting from Route 50 now because they have speed cams and they've come over on to Main Street," said DeVage.
Norma Delano, who owns The Country House on that street, said adding yet another camera will not fix the problem.
"I think it would be better if they change the 25 miles an hour speed to 30," Delano said. "Make it more flexible, by being pulled over they (drivers) are upset and in some cases they might even just go home rather than coming and shopping like they had planned on."
Barkley said the existing speed cameras are producing positive results. That is why adding another one may get drivers on the street to slow down.
"The number of vehicles that we are capturing that are actually going 12 over, those numbers are coming down," Barkley said.
"It's about safety of not only my customers but the folks who do business here," said DeVage. "I don't define that as a speed trap or being anxious to write tickets, they are trying to send a signal to the folks that are coming through here that you need to slow down."
Barkley said that nothing is set in stone but the department is currently working with some road safety studies to determine if speed cameras are needed on that street.
