SALISBURY, Md.- Police have arrested a Salisbury man for his second drunk driving offense in less than a month.
The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office said that on Aug. 17, 26-year-old Jhontas B. Coutinho was driving a car at night without headlights. After he was pulled over officials said a deputy detected an odor of alcohol coming from Coutinho and believed that he was under the influence of alcohol.
Police said Coutinho performed poorly on sobriety tests, which led to him being arrested for DUI. The deputy discovered that Coutinho had just been arrested for DUI back on Aug. 3. Authorities said that when confronted about the recent arrest, Coutinho became irate and attempted to assault the deputy.
Police said that because of Coutinho's behavior, a specially-equipped cage car had to be used for his transport. Authorities said Coutinho resisted efforts to be placed in the vehicle, which required the deputy to physically assist Coutinho into the vehicle. Once inside the vehicle, Coutinho managed to get his handcuffed arms in front of his body in an apparent attempt to reach through the cage, police said.
Coutinho refused to provide a breath sample when requested, police said. He was transported to the Central Booking Unit where he was charged with DUI, second-degree assault and resisting arrest. He was released on personal recognizance.
