SALISBURY, Md. - Police say a traffic stop on Tuesday afternoon led to a big bust. Maryland State Police said they responded to several calls for a possibly intoxicated driver heading toward Salisbury on Tuesday.
Troopers observed reckless driving and stopped a Blue Honda Accord on Merritt Mill Rd. Police say they conducted a field sobriety test on 31-year-old Matthew S. King, from Greenland Beach, Md., who was found to be under the influence of prescribed medication and other controlled dangerous substances. King, a firearms collector, told police he was in possession of a dozen firearms.
Two of the modified firearms were not registered; a field test found one firearm was set up for automatic fire.
King, 31, was arrested on several drug and gun charges, including carrying a concealed deadly weapon and possession of unlawful firearm.
"There is a potential that something very tragic could have happened if he wasn't stopped," Trooper Josh Greenman said.
Police said King changed his story often during the investigation.
"He changed his story a few times, but at one point he stated he was coming back from Berlin where he was shooting some of his guns with friends," Greenman told WBOC.
The seized items included a modified Bushmaster XM-15, a modified Ruger Model 10-22, 3 Remingtons, Mauser, Western Auto Supply, a FN Herstal, and nearly 2000 rounds of ammunition.
Police said King was arrested in Ocean City three days prior to this traffic stop for carrying a concealed weapon and drug possession.
King is being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center on $250,000 bond.
