GEORGETOWN, Del.- Delaware State Police say two teenage bicyclists had to be rushed to the hospital Thursday after they were struck by a car in Georgetown.
According to police, the accident occurred at approximately 3:51 p.m., as 47-year-old Alfred J. Wyatt of Ellendale was operating a 1992 Chrysler Fifth Avenue eastbound on Zoar Road and approaching the railroad tracks west of Stockley Road. Troopers said that meantime, three boys on bicycles were traveling eastbound on Zoar Road just in front of the Chrysler. Police said that as Wyatt was attempting to pass the bicyclists on the left, the three began to cross the road in front of the car.
Troopers said Wyatt attempted to brake and swerve more to the left in an attempt to avoid the bikes, but he struck two of the three bicycles with the front passenger's side of the Fifth Avenue.
The two bicyclists- ages 14 and 15 and both from Georgetown- were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the third bicyclist- a 12-year-old Georgetown boy- was not injured in the crash and was able to avoid being struck. All three boys were not wearing helmets, according to investigators.
Troopers said Wyatt was not injured in the crash but was cited for driving while suspended, failure to have insurance in possession and failure to change address.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
