DOVER, Del. (AP/WBOC)- Volunteers are urged to preregister for the 26th annual Delaware Coastal Cleanup.

The cleanup, which is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Sept. 15, spans the state's 97-mile eastern coastline and includes river and ocean shorelines as well as wetland and watershed areas. It is sponsored by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.

During last year's cleanup, more than 2,200 volunteers helped collect more than 10 tons of trash from more than 40 sites.

In addition to large numbers of food wrappers, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bags, used tires and cigarette butts, organizers said the more unusual finds included a BMX bicycle, barbed wire, a propane tank, a woman's wig, a retainer for braces, a flag pole, bikini bottoms, a full bottle of whiskey, 14 appliances, a port-a-potty and a rodent trap.

Organizers said nearly four tons of the trash- mostly aluminum cans and plastic bottles - were recycled.

To preregister for the event, visit www.dnrec.delaware.gov/CoastalCleanup. Preregistration ends Tuesday. For more information, call coordinator Rachel Coats at (302) 739-9902 or email rachel.coats@state.de.us.

DOVER, Del. (WBOC) - Delaware's obsession with low-number license plates is easy to see. All you have to do is drive down any road in the first state. But there's another low-number obsession that's less
Right now you have the opportunity to be a part of it for free.
