Berlin Examining Flood-Prone Areas

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md.- People on Franklin Avenue and Nelson Street in Berlin watched Thursday morning as floodwaters rose toward their homes. This storm system was nothing, though, compared to the storm that dumped around 13 inches over an eight-hour span nearly two weeks ago.

"Every time we have a good thunderstorm we have this problem," John Whittington, a Nelson Street homeowner, said. "We've been dealing with this for years."

Berlin's town administrator, Anthony Carson, told WBOC a storm water study, which will include recommendations and cost estimates specifically for Berlin, will soon be released from the University of Maryland. Carson said the next step would be for the mayor and council to consider establishing a storm water utility.

Back on Nelson Street, Whittington said something needs to be done about the flooding.

"Most of the time we have problems with it going into our crawl space but not really inside the house," Whittington said. "I'm just hoping the town eventually will do something with the problem."
