POCOMOKE CITY, Md.- The U.S. Department of Education has named Pocomoke Elementary School a National Blue Ribbon School, it was announced Friday.
Pocomoke Elementary School was named a Maryland Blue Ribbon School in January for a recurring track record of high student achievement, as measured by results of the Maryland State Assessments. The Maryland State Department of Education then submitted the school for national consideration.
"We have been waiting for this exciting news," said Pocomoke Elementary Principal Michael Browne. "Our entire school family has worked so hard to prepare our students for success; they are phenomenal!"
Last year, 97.7 percent of third-graders at Pocomoke Elementary scored proficient or advanced on the 2012 reading MSA and 98.8 scored proficient or advanced in math.
Pocomoke Elementary School was recognized in 2011 as a National Title I Distinguished School for sustained student achievement. It is the only school in Maryland to be recognized as a 2010 Panasonic National School Change Award Winner, demonstrating exemplary growth in overall student achievement.
Pocomoke Elementary joins four other National Blue Ribbon Schools in the Worcester County Public School System: Ocean City, Showell, and Snow Hill Elementary and Stephen Decatur Middle School.
Nine of the 12 eligible Worcester County schools are Maryland Blue Ribbon Schools: Ocean City, Pocomoke, Showell, and Snow Hill Elementary Schools; Snow Hill and Stephen Decatur Middle Schools; and Pocomoke, Snow Hill, and Stephen Decatur High Schools.
