ANNAPOLIS, MD — Sophomore August Jonas (Jacksonville, Fla.) shot a
4-over par 146 to guide the Navy golf team to a sixth-place finish at
the 2012 Navy Fall Classic Sunday at the Naval Academy Golf Club. Navy also fielded gold and white squads which finished ninth and 13th, respectively.
North Dakota State ran away with the team title, turning in a 3-under par 565 which featured a 5-under par opening round on Saturday.
The Bison are the 15th different team in the tournament's 19-year
history to win the title. Meanwhile, the top three finishers were from
North Dakota State, including senior Nathan Anderson who claimed
medalist honors with a 4-under par 138 (68-70). He finished three
strokes ahead of sophomore teammate Bill Carlson who was 1-under
(69-72).
North Dakota State was the lone team to shoot under
par for the weekend, as St. Bonaventure wrapped up second place with a
12-over par 580 (290-290), followed by a tight race for the remaining
spots among the top five. Temple jumped from seventh to third with a
16-over par 584 (296-288), followed by St. Francis (Pa.) at 585
(288-297) and Brown took fifth with a 586 (291-295) and just nipped the
Mids who shot a 20-over par 588 (294-294).
Not only was Jonas the top placewinner for the Navy
blue squad, he was the top finisher among all Navy golfers over the
weekend, putting together a 1-over par 72 on Saturday to pair up with a 3-over par 74 on Sunday
to place 14th. Jonas took medalist honors at last year's Navy Fall
Classic. Juniors Drew Selby (Charlotte, N.C.) and David Hall
(Huntersville, N.C.) finished in 24th with a 6-over par 148. Selby
turned in scores of 75 and 73, while Hall was consistent with a pair of
74s. Meanwhile, junior Chris House (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Staton
Pruitt (Columbia, S.C.) tied for 34th with an 8-over par 150. House
began the tournament with a solid 2-over par 73, while Pruitt fell
behind with a 6-over par 77. The two flip-flopped scores on Sunday.
The Navy Gold team struggled in the opening round,
posting a 20-over par 304. Led by second-year standout Brad Elder
(Roanoke, Va.), the gold squad fought back, shaving 10 strokes off its
score and pushing up from 11th to place tied for ninth with a 36-hole
mark of 598 (+30). Elder was one of three players on the gold team to
shoot a 2-over par 73 in the final round and was the low scorer for the
tournament with a 5-over par 147 to put him in 20th. Junior Bobby
Keating (Garden City, N.Y.) fell in at 28th with a 149 (74-75), while
hometown favorite rookie Garrett Moyer (Annapolis, Md.) finished 34th
with an 8-over par 150. Team captain Chris Reed (Springfield, Ohio) was
one of the three players to register a 73 in the final round, as he
placed 46th with a 10-over par 152. Rounding out the team was senior
Pat Collins (Floral Park, N.Y.), who improved his opening-round score by
eight strokes and placed 72nd with a 20-over par 162.
Sophomore Colby Lederer (Levittown, Pa.) placed 28th
with a 7-over par 149 to anchor the Navy White team (614, +46) to a
13th-place finish. Lederer shot the low round of day by any of the
Midshipmen golfers with a 1-over par 72. Newcomer Zeke Shaffer
(Radford, Va.) was unable to build upon his opening-round 72, falling
back with an 8-over par 79 on Sunday
to finish 42nd with a 151. Sophomore Robert Zieser Misenheimer (Myrtle
Beach, S.C.) finished 62nd with a 15-over par 157, followed by
two-sport junior Sean Murphy (Hudson, Ohio) in 71st (160) and sophomore
Bryce Keene (Bakersfield, Calif.) in 72nd (162).
Navy rookie David Won (Bothell, Wash.) saw his first
collegiate action playing as an individual where he placed 50th with a
12-over par 154 (79-75).
"I was happy to see
the depth of our team as we have a fairly young group this year," said
23rd-year Navy head coach Pat Owen. "That said, I do think everybody
has a few strokes they need to tighten up from 100 yards in."
The Midshipmen will use the next two weeks to
prepare for their annual Star Match against rival Army slated for Sept.
22-23 at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J. Navy has won each
of the last two Star Matches.
