STEVENSVILLE, Md.- It was a warm Sunday afternoon in June, one that neighbors along Wicomico Road in Kent Island will never forget.
A massive fire, devouring the dry brush. It also threatened to burn homes, forcing many people to seek shelter elsewhere.
Investigators with Maryland's Department of Natural Resources now say the fire was sparked by people smoking marijuana, leaving neighbors in Awe.
It was shock sent through this neighborhood, we have pretty good neighbors, never heard anything like that going on before," said Kevin Henderson of Stevensville.
A fire of that size shocked neighbors, but what surprised them even more was the fact that marijuana was being grown in the woods.
Henderson has lived near Wicomico Road for over 10 years. He said that never once has he seen drug- or alcohol-use in the woods.
"It's scary that it's going on I know the sheriff's department here is trying to crack down on drugs in this neighborhood and Queen Anne's in general and in 14 years this is the first occurrence," said Henderson.
Al Torre lives just a few feet from the wooded area that caught fire. He said it is so isolated back in the woods, it is hard to know what's really going on back there.
"I was very surprised to hear that people were growing marijuana back there but as isolated as it is, you can see where it would be an ideal place for something like that to happen," said Torre.
This incident may well be the spark this community needs to keep a closer eye on suspicious activity.
