RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Virginia education officials say the state's new, more rigorous mathematics tests proved to be a challenge for all types of students during the last school year.
The state Department of Education released Standards of Learning results Wednesday for the 2011-2012 school year by race and other subgroups.
Officials said last month that math results were down notably from a year ago due to revised standards aimed at better preparing students for college or post-graduation employment.
Overall, 68 percent of students passed the math assessments in the 2011-2012 school year, compared with 87 percent the year before. Pass rates fell by between 8 and 26 percentage points among the subgroups, with the largest drops seen among black students and those with disabilities.
