PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- A Wicomico Middle School student might be the next National Spelling Bee champion!

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore and public schools in Somerset and Wicomico counties are working together to give students access to the event.

And it started with 12-year-old Jeffrey Dumpson, a seventh grade student at Wicomico Middle School in Salisbury. He always dreamed of entering a spelling bee. With the help of his mother, school officials joined the cause.

And already, many local students have begun practicing for the National Spelling Bee.

"One for recognition, and two for extra credit," Jeffrey said.

Seventh grader Allison Sahler of Salisbury, who is also practicing for the national competition, said, "I am very excited because I have been into words for a very long time. I have been into how they were made, like their origins and roots and each piece of the word."

In the next few months, a local spelling bee will be held for students in Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties.
