TILGHMAN ISLAND, Md.- There could soon be a cellphone tower to provide service to the people of Tilghman Island.
Lynn Brookhouser, who has lived on Tilghman Island for four years, said a cell tower is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
"It's needed for several reasons. I think it's needed for safety, it's needed for convenience and it's needed for tourism," Brookhouser said.
The cell tower would provide a steady signal to the Lower Bay Hundred area for the first time. It will be hidden inside of a bell tower at the Tilghman United Methodist Church on Tilghman Island Road.
"It's the best of both worlds by putting a bell tower up with these internal antennas inside it," Brookhouser said. "We can do something to upgrade the aesthetics of the community and at the same time provide a much-needed wireless communication."
The 95-foot tower will hold between two and five wireless carriers; however, some say there are better options than putting a tower on church property.
Stephen Myels of Tilghman Island wants a cell tower in town but said officials should consider putting it somewhere else.
"There is probably plenty of places to put a cell tower, behind the school, which would be a block and a half from the church and you have the end of the island. It already has a radar detector, it may be good at the end of the island," Myels said.
The cell tower is meant to improve communication and enhance safety.
