Va. Board Again Considers Abortion Clinic Regs

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Activists on both sides of the abortion issue have gathered outside another Virginia Board of Health meeting on abortion clinic regulations.

The board is scheduled to take comments before voting on the regulations Friday in Richmond.

Several hundred people gathered outside the meeting room amid police presence. Some carried signs that read "No Access, No Choice" and "Face it ... abortion kills a person."

The board approved the regulations in June, but not before stripping out a hotly contested provision requiring clinics to meet the same strict building standards as new hospitals.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli said the board overstepped its authority. He refused to certify the regulations, putting them back before the board.

Abortion-rights supporters say the building standards are intended to put clinics out of business.
