HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP)- An American Muslim group is calling on the FBI to investigate vandalism at a mosque in Harrisonburg, which was spray-painted with obscene graffiti that included a reference to Iraqis and the phrase, "This is America."
Vulgar graffiti was also discovered at a high school and a Christian school, and local police say it's not clear that the vandalism was directed at Muslims. Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson describes the graffiti as the work of "local knuckleheads" that "would be offensive to a wide range of people."
The Council on American-Islamic Relations says there was evidence of a bias motive in the graffiti at the Islamic Center of Shenandoah Valley. Also this past weekend, cars were vandalized near a mosque in Falls Church, but police don't believe the mosque was targeted.
