BRANDYWINE HUNDRED, Del. (AP)- Authorities say a 12-year-old boy was critically injured when the dirt bike he was riding was hit by a SUV driven by an off-duty officer in Delaware.

State Police Sgt. Paul G. Shavack says the off-duty Elsmere police officer reported the collision about 7:20 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of Wilson Road in Brandywine Hundred. Shavack says the officer found the boy unresponsive but breathing, and monitored him until emergency officials arrived.

The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical condition.

Shavack says that the boy was not wearing a helmet.

Chief Laura Giles of the Elsmere police department says the officer was cooperating with state police.
