DEWEY BEACH, Del. - Roughly 125 bands are set to take the stage this weekend in the 11th annual Dewey Beach Music Conference.
The free performances began Thursday night and will continue through the weekend at seven venues throughout town. Artists from around the country travel to Dewey for a chance in the spotlight.
"It's just a great place to see up and coming bands," said organizer Vikki Walls. "You see them here first and see them on tv later."
Walls is always on the look out for rising stars. The event has become a launching point for lesser known acts to sign a record deal or break into the professional industry.
"We've had a lot of bands that have become wildly successful," said Alex Pires, who owns some of the venues. "But you get to see them here at the very beginning."
Beach businesses also hope to hit a high note with the off season event.
"Any events in the off season will definitely help us rent a few rooms," said Rob Marshall, owner of the Atlantic Oceanside Motel."
The music conference will also feature panels to help musicians develop their skills as well as a trade show. The events continue through Saturday.
