BALTIMORE (AP)- Baltimore police say they have launched a criminal investigation into the death of a 46-year-old man who died while in police custody and who was originally reported to have choked on drugs.
Police say a preliminary autopsy shows the man did not die from choking on drugs. However, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the medical examiner has not determined whether he died from a drug overdose, an injury or another cause. Guglielmi says that the man, identified as Anthony Anderson by family members, was injured, but didn't have a neck injury as some witnesses have claimed.
Police initially said officers were attempting to arrest Anderson for a narcotics offense when he consumed the drugs and was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
