SALISBURY, Md.- Two 12-year-old male students are facing criminal charges for allegedly bringing a BB gun resembling an actual handgun to Bennett Middle School on East College Avenue in Salisbury on Thursday.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the school shortly after 1 p.m., after receiving reports that a seventh-grade student was brandishing a weapon at the school.

Authorities said the deputy assigned to the school located the student, who no longer had the weapon in his possession. The investigation led to another student's locker where police said the weapon was found.

According to investigators, the weapon was identified as a BB gun that looked very much like an actual handgun. The BB gun was seized and the student who allegedly was waving it around and the student who hid it inside his locker will be charged through the Department of Juvenile Services.

Officers said that because the students who observed this incident believed the BB gun to be an actual handgun, both students will be charged with having a weapon on school property. Both students were released to their guardians.
