Ravens Center Matt Birk Opposes Same-Sex Marriage

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Last month, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brandon Ayanbadejo publicly supported the new same-sex marriage law in Maryland. Now teammate Matt Birk is also going on the record, taking a firm stand against same-sex marriage.

"I think they influence some people, today young people are influenced. They have peer pressure and they look up to these athletes," said Judy Vancuren, a Cambridge resident.

Birk is expected to film a video opposing same-sex marriage this week, similar to one he made while a member of the Minnesota Vikings. People spoke out against the video then, and are doing the same now.

"I think it's a little over the top, I personally don't think that he should," said Suzanne Gray of Cambridge.

"I don't think they should talk about it," said Adam Hooper of Cambridge.

Some say these players should stay quiet on such a hot button issue, but others argue it is a matter of freedom of speech.

William Kelly said that although they are NFL players, they still have an opinion and a voice.

"If he is saying it as a Raven, then Baltimore and the NFL should have control over what he says," Kelly said. "If he's saying it as a person, than it's America's free speech."
