RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Virginia pumpkin growers say their 2012 crop was a good one, with the big squash arriving at retail outlets around the state.

Kevin Semones of the Virginia Pumpkin Growers Association says jack-o-lantern pumpkins are the biggest he's ever seen. He says Virginia fared better than many neighboring states, where the pumpkins are in short supply.

Virginia has approximately 3,000 acres of pumpkins, gourds, squash and other Halloween-related items. The state produces around 5.3 million of the larger pumpkins for market each year, plus thousands of pounds more of smaller pumpkins and gourds.

Some of the most popular varieties of orange pumpkins are the Patsy Kline, Gladiator, Magic Lantern and Aladdin.
