DOVER, Del.- Motorists tempted to drink and drive this weekend in Delaware should think again: police have scheduled DUI checkpoints in three different locations across the state.

According to the state Office of Highway Safety, the checkpoints will be held this weekend at the following locations:

Friday, Oct. 12

  • Newport (New Castle County DUI Task Force)
  • Fenwick Island (Delaware State Police)

Saturday, Oct. 13

  • Rehoboth Beach (Multi-jurisdictional effort)

The checkpoints are part of the ongoing Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign, a regional sobriety campaign aimed at arrested DUI offenders. The OHS said that last weekend, officers arrested nine people for DUI as part of the Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign. In addition, officers issued two citations for underage drinking, apprehended three wanted individuals, made three drug arrests, issued one cellphone citation, issued two seat belt citations, issued one child restraint citation and issued 36 citations for various other traffic violations.

There have been more than 3,700 DUI arrests statewide since January, according to the OHS.
