DelDOT Inspects Vehicles for Winter

Posted:

LEWES, Del.- You probably are not even thinking about winter weather yet, but the Delaware Department of Transportation is. Winter is not just about staying warm; it is also about staying safe on the roads.

DelDOT spent Thursday inspecting its fleet of trucks and plows. Approximately 450 vehicles and 500 people will be working this winter in the event of snow and ice. Secretary of Transportation Shaileen Bhatt said keeping the public safe comes with a big price tag.

"We budget about $3 million a year for all storm events, not just snow and ice," he said. "Hurricane Irene last year was a big impact, and it tells you the kind of weather we've been having for the last few years. We've exceeded that budget every year for the past several years."

With forecasters expecting a cold winter, Bhatt said whatever snow the region gets, DelDOT will be ready.
