Forecast Sizes up Va. Peanuts, Tobacco, Cotton

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Virginia tobacco, peanut and soybean production is up, while corn is down, according to the latest report from state and federal farm officials.

The forecasts are based on Oct. 1 conditions surveyed by the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

The survey found that soybean production for 2012 is estimated at more than 22 million bushels. That's up 3% from last year. Harvested acres total 580,000, up 30,000 acres.

Virginia's corn production is forecast at more than 33 million bushels, down 17 percent from 2011. Producers expect to harvest 350,000 acres for grain.

Cotton production is expected to total 170,000 bales, up 5 percent, while flue-cured and barley tobacco production are both up.

Finally, peanut production is forecast at 80 million pounds, up 30 percent from last year.
