CHESTERTOWN, MD – Visiting Dickinson got 13 kills, 14 digs and a match-best four aces from Jessie Shaffner en route to a 3-1 victory (24-26, 25-21, 25-23, 25-21) over host Washington College on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference volleyball action at the Cain Athletic Center. The Red Devils improve to 5-12 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Shorewomen drop to 9-12 and 2-4 respectively.
In the first set, the Shorewomen won the final two points to capture the set. A service error by Dickinson snapped a 24-24 tie and Washington clinched it on a kill by senior middle hitter Jenny Lee (Wilmington, DE/Mount Pleasant).
In the second set, the set was tied at 20-20 when Dickinson won five of the final six points to take the set. A block by Emily Smith and Avery Zuvic put the guests up for good at 21-20 and the Red Devils clinched the second set on a Smith kill.
Dickinson never trailed in the third set en route to a 25-23 victory. A Zuvic kill gave the Red Devils a 2-1 lead entering the fourth set.
In the fourth set, Washington led 17-14 on a Jenny Lee kill, but Dickinson went on a 11-4 run to close out the set and claim the win. Shaffner put the Red Devils up for good at 18-17 and that was part of a 9-0 run to put Dickinson ahead 23-17 on a Jenn Morrissey kill. A kill by Smith secured the set and match for Dickinson.
Joining Shaffner in double figures in kills were Zuvic and Sam Iazzetta who both had 11. Morrissey had a double-double with a match-high 44 assists to go with 11 digs. Grace Morgan had a team-high 16 digs, while Mairi Poisson had 12 digs and Joanna DeCastro added 10 digs. Zuvic had four blocks to lead the Red Devils.
Freshman outside hitter Kristin Lee (Dayton, MD/River Hill) had 11 kills and 20 digs for her ninth double-double of the year. Jenny Lee had 13 kills to tie Shaffner for match-high along with a team-best three aces, while freshman middle hitter Jess Daunoras (Shamong, NJ/Seneca) added 10 kills. Sophomore libero Kate Liccione (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) had 21 digs to lead all players, while senior defensive specialist Kaitlin Rowan (Damascus, MD/Damascus) chipped in with 14 digs. Freshman setter Jesse Sengstacke (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) dished out 38 assists.
Dickinson hit .174 in the match, while Washington hit .171. The Shorewomen had nine blocks, while the Red Devils had six rejections.
The Shorewomen return to the court tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. when they travel to Wesley.
