HARRISONBURG, VA – The University of Delaware men's soccer team
rallied with thanks to a Mark Garrity second-half goal that produced a
1-1 double-overtime tie with James Madison University in a Colonial
Athletic Association match Sunday afternoon at JMU's University Park.
Delaware moved to 3-8-3 overall and 1-2-2 in the CAA while James Madison
moved to 5-5-3 (3-1-2 CAA).
"I couldn't be more proud of our team's commitment today," Delaware head
coach Ian Hennessy said. "JMU has just completed a $43 million dollar
soccer complex that can be very intimidating for traveling teams and I
can see why they beat the nation's number one team (North Carolina)
earlier this season."
The Dukes struck first in the 49th minute of the second half when Tom
Fouhy's header from a corner kick by Christian McLaughlin gave JMU the
early 1-0 advantage.
In the 74th minute, UD's Garrity knocked the ball inside the right post
from a Kyle Nuel crossing pass and knotted the game at 1-1. The goal was
Garrity's team-leading third of the season.
Delaware and James Madison battled for 20 additional minutes in a pair
of overtime periods as UD took one shot and JMU tallied four. However,
neither squad could tally a deciding goal and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
UD collected 16 shots on the day with junior Roberto Gimenez leading the
team with three shots on goal. JMU's McLaughlin led with three shots on
goal as the Dukes tallied 17 in the tie.
Delaware sophomore goalkeeper Jay Lupas made six saves while JMU's
goalkeeper Kyle Morton made four saves in the tie.
"We had great leadership today and I think they drew on the experience
from our conference championship from last year, which JMU hosted, to
see us home with a vital point in the CAA standings" Hennessy added. "I
am thrilled that we continue to climb the CAA table and that will make
the final two weeks interesting as ever."
The Blue Hens make the 42-mile trip up I-95 to face the Drexel
University Dragons for another CAA match on Wednesday, October 17 at 7
p.m. at DU's Vidas Field.
