LAUREL, Del.- Patrick Vanderslice, the board of education president for the Laurel School District, spoke at Wednesday night's school board meeting. Vanderslice has been suspended from practicing law for at least a year by the Delaware Supreme Court.
District Superintendent John Ewald told WBOC that Vanderslice's statement was well-received.
"The action taken by the Supreme Court is related to Mr. Vanderslice's professional status, and not his status on the board of education," Ewald said in a statement. "I can assure our citizens that this issue will in no way distract us from our students or our job of providing them an outstanding education here in the Laurel School District."
Vanderslice's suspension came from an investigation in which he admitted to stealing $1,780 from his then-employer between December 2010 and September 2011. Vanderslice reimbursed the firm, which had fired him after discovering the theft, and informed the Delaware Office of Disciplinary Counsel of what had happened.
Vanderslice was elected to the school board in 2011.
Ewald would not say if any further action would be taken, or if Vanderslice had abided by the district's ethics code.
"At this time I don't think it's appropriate for me to comment on that," Ewald said. "Mr. Vanderslice at last night's board of education meeting did account for his actions. He apologized to the community, and we look forward to moving forward through the rest of the school year."
