The Hudson Farm is located outside Berlin, Md. (Photo: WBOC)BALTIMORE (AP/WBOC)- Testimony has ended in Baltimore in a closely watched environmental lawsuit against an Eastern Shore chicken grower and poultry giant Perdue Farms Inc.
Farm groups say the lawsuit could bankrupt the Hudson Farm and set a harmful precedent for others. Environmentalist say poultry companies should be responsible for pollution by their growers.
The Waterkeeper Alliance says the Berlin farm is polluting the nearby Pocomoke River. Lawyers for the Hudson family and Salisbury-based Perdue say there is no evidence of pollution.
About 10 minutes of testimony from the final witness was presented by telephone Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Baltimore. Closing arguments were tentatively scheduled for Nov. 30 before District Judge William Nickerson, who will decide the non-jury trial.
