DOVER, Del. (AP)- Candidates for Delaware's lone U.S. House seat are offering sharply different perspectives on the role of the federal government.

Democratic incumbent John Carney Jr. squared off Wednesday at a debate in Wilmington with Republican Tom Kovach, Libertarian Scott Gesty and Green Party candidate Bernard August.

The candidates offered contrasting positions on the government's role in issues ranging from health care and the economy to sports betting and higher education.

When Carney said the federal government should not interfere with states that want to legalize medical marijuana, Kovach said the same "get out of the way" approach should apply to health care and education.

Gesty went further, saying the Department of Education should be closed, while August called for total public funding of higher education and forgiveness of student loan debt.
