KINGS POINT, NY -- The Washington College sailing team finished seventh of 18 teams at the War Memorial - the MAISA Fall Co-Ed Dinghy Championships - this weekend at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Washington was also ninth of nine teams at the Top Nine Invitational, hosted by New York Maritime, this weekend. The seventh-place finish at the War Memorial qualified the team for the Atlantic Coast Dinghy Championships, to be hosted by Merchant Marine in two weeks.
At the War Memorial, junior skipper Sam Fitzgerald (Fairfield, CT/Greens Farms Academy) and senior crew Matt Lawler (Alexandria, VA/Christchurch School) were eighth in A Division, while sophomore skipper Ryan Bailey (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) and senior crew Maggie Smith (Annapolis, MD/Garrison Forest) finished seventh in B Division. Fitzgerald drove Washington seven top-six A Division finishes in the division's 18 races, including a win in the second race. Bailey skippered Washington to nine top-six finished in the B Division race, including each of the final six races in the division.
Twelve A Division and 11 B Division races at the War Memorial sailed on Saturday. The remaining races sailed on Sunday as the regatta moved along quickly in order to wrap up the regatta and have the participants back on the road ahead of Hurricane Sandy's arrival. Top-ranked Georgetown won the War Memorial, followed by seventh-ranked St. Mary's in second and 13th-ranked Navy in third. Fourteenth-ranked Hobart/William Smith was fourth, 12th-ranked Old Dominion fifth, and 18th-ranked New York Maritime was sixth. Washington finished in front of 19th-ranked Fordham, which finished in eighth place.
At the Top Nine Invitational, freshman skipper Eric Siegel (Kilmarnock, VA/Christchurch School) sailed with freshman crew Richard Grouser(Rosenhayn, NJ/Saint Augustine Prep) and freshman crew Adam Green (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) were sixth in A Division. Washington was ninth in B Division as freshman Siobhan Ryan (Aberdeen, NJ/St. John Vianney) and senior Sam Bedinger (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's)split time at skipper and freshmen Alex Crawford (Annapolis, MD/Severna Park), Jackie DeSoto (Port Tobacco, MD/Henry E. Lackey), and Keaton Bresnahan (Millersville, MD/Old Mill) all saw time as crew.
Georgetown, Navy, and St. Mary's finished in the top three spots at the Top Nine Invitational, respectively. Fourteen races sailed in each division at the Top Nine Invitational. As at the War Memorial, the majority of races were completed on Saturday and the regatta finished up by mid-day on Sunday.
The Washington College sailing team will compete at the Hap Moore Team Race, hosted by Coast Guard, next weekend.
