A WBOC NewsWatcher on Monday, Oct. 29, submitted this photo of the downtown pier in Ocean City, which was significantly damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP/WBOC)- Hurricane Sandy has done significant damage to a large fishing pier in the beach resort of Ocean City.
Town officials confirmed the damage, which occurred early Monday as heavy surf pounded at the pilings.
Gov. Martin O'Malley says the fishing pier is now "half-gone."
The pier extends from the southern end of the Boardwalk in an area that has been under a mandatory evacuation order.
It has several small buildings on it, the last of which is a bait and tackle shop. After that point, about 100 to 150 feet of the pier is gone.
The area at the boardwalk end of the pier has some debris but remains intact.
