RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Gov. Bob McDonnell is asking for a federal emergency declaration to help state and local governments and other agencies respond to and recover from the impacts of Hurricane Sandy.

McDonnell on Monday made the request to President Barack Obama and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The governor's office says the federal public assistance program would make funding available to cover costs for emergency measures and debris removal.

It is too early for the state to request federal disaster assistance for individuals.
